I would never have believed that the farm animal in the crate at O'Hare had the makings of a Buddha, yet Kissy has become one of my greatest  teachers. She struggled to learn new things and adopt new ways, and she mastered them (mostly). She endured lots of medical interventions so that she could thrive (just like me). She's every bit as transformed by her efforts as I am by mine, and then some. And when I think of my sweet underdog who willed herself to my door and then, step-by-step, made herself over for her love of me and her dream of a life in the civilized world. And I am inspired. And recommitted.

Kissy’s Rules for a Happy Life 

• Don’t be a yes girl. 
• Just say no. A lot. 
• Take time to smell the . . . well, anything. 
• Who cares what anyone thinks! 
• You deserve lots and lots of treats. 
• You can never take too many naps. 
• Find your tribe and don’t let them out of your sight. 
• And last and most important, no matter how you begin, you can always have a happy ending.
